How should one describe Le Jardin des Rosiers ? Is it above all a “rose garden” ? Not in the classic sense. Certainly the garden holds a remarkable collection of more than 350 roses, most of which are the true old-fashioned varieties. But a garden is not simply a collection of plants. Here the roses are planted amongst flowering perennials & shrubs, they climb in trees & pergolas or spill over the ground … creating the most natural effect. The discovery of the history of these roses, their origins & their stories, is definitely a fascinating aspect of the visit, without the garden being in any way a “museum” of roses. No, it is much more about colours, perfumes, romanticism & the beauty of the rose.
But that’s not all …

Is the garden an english garden ? Well yes, that it certainly is. The garden being a series of “rooms” with different atmospheres, the Mixed-Borders with sumptuous perennials in colour themes, the benches placed under a shady, rose covered pergola or at the foot of a tree … all add up to a style which is so well known as “the english garden”. But that’s not all …

For if the garden appeals to all our senses – sight, sound, smell, touch … it possesses another quality, equally important, that of being a refuge for the fauna & flora, as much as it is for man. The “raison d’être” for Le Jardin des Rosiers is in effect to offer to all forms of life a peaceful haven & to act for the protection of the environment. It is sufficient to listen to the birds, who are visibly so “at home” here, to observe the dance of the butterflies & dragonflies & to hear the deafening buzzing of the bees or the conversations between the frogs … to understand that all that exists in nature is protected here. The garden “décor” is constantly changing without ceasing, throughout the different flowering seasons. But the feeling of well-being remains an unwavering constant.

Every garden, small or large, in town or country, plays an essential role as a miniature nature reserve for the planet. The principle is simple: avoid any act or gesture which risks to harm nature. Faithfull to this philosophy, there now exists in Le Jardin des Rosiers a true ecosystem, a group of living beings constantly interacting, creating a natural balance, born from the laws of the universe. And so the garden becomes a refuge, a place where all forms of life can co-exist. And it is this background harmony out of which arises the garden & the so very special feeling of peace and tranquility, which offers another indefinable quality – a sense of peaceful well-being for the visiter.
